Happy Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day

"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Ex 20:12 (NIV)

This is the 5th commandment. The first commandment with a promise. The first commandment after all of those about God Himself and before the ones about how we deal with all others. Looks to me like it’s a prety important commandment, after God and before others. Seems that our parents should play an important role in our lives, and as such, should be properly honored.

I bring this up today, Father’s Day, for obviious reasons. What have you planned, to show your father how much he means to you on this special day? Will you take him to dinner? Did you get him a present (hint: tools or gadgets) or a gift card at his favorite store? Are you taking him some place special? These are all great things to do to help in honoring our dads.

I think that what most dads would say that they want is the love of their children shown in any way they choose, every day of the year. This could mean giving them a call and letting them know what they mean to you, or asking for their help so that they know that they are still needed. A note, now and then, telling them what they mean to you, or just some special time, on a weekly basis to just talk about your life and what is going on.

Most dads just want to be included and don’t want to be forgotten. Find that special way to do this, and your dad will be truly honored.
